Prima del 1940 esisteva un premio Oscar alla migliore storia. Dal 1940 quest'ultimo e il premio di questo articolo vennero separati in due premi. A partire dagli Oscar del 1957 le due categorie vennero combinate per onorare solo la sceneggiatura.
