613 mitzvot

Il Talmud (trattato Makkoth 23b) stabilisce che la Torah contiene 613 mitzvot (precetti) dei quali 248 sono mitzvot aseh (comandamenti positivi, prescrizioni) pari al numero delle ossa del corpo umano e 365 sono mitzvot taaseh (comandamenti negativi, divieti) pari al numero dei giorni di un anno solare.

Il significato di 613

Sia il Talmud (trattato Makkoth 23b) che la Midrash calcolano che il valore numerico (gematria) della parola Torah è 611. La Torah stessa stabilisce che Mosè tramise la Torah da Dio al popolo ebraico: Una legge ci ha ordinato Mosè; un`eredità è l`assemblea di Giacobbe (Deuteronomio 33,4). Inoltre ci sono 2 comandamenti che Dio manda direttamente al popolo ebraico: i primi due dei Dieci Comandamenti; questi sono posti in prima persona. La somma di 611 + 2 fornisce 613.

Molti filosofi ebrei e lavori di mistici (Baal ha-Turim, the Maharal of Prague e i leaders del Giudaismo Hasidico) hanno fatto sia allusioni che calcoli ispirati relativi al numero dei comandamenti.

Lavori che enumerano i comandamenti

In pratica non esiste una lista definitiva che presenta le 613 leggi. Le differenze provengono dal fatto che a volte la Torah presenta le leggi collegate tutte insieme e perciò è difficile sapere a quale precetto è collegata la singola legge, quale legge presenta casi diversi o se si tratta di leggi diverse. Altre volte il comandamento della Torah è riferito ad una particolare azione in un determinato tempo e non è considerabile come un mitzvot. Nella letteratura rabbinica ci sono diversi lavori che hanno lo scopo di determinare quali comandamenti appartengono a questa enumerazione, tra i più importanti:

• Maimonide: Sefer Hamitzvot (Libro dei Comandamenti) con un commento critico di Nachmanide;
• Sefer ha-Chinnuch (Libro dell' Educazione), attribuito a Rabbi Aaron ha-Levi di Barcellona (the Ra'ah);
• Sefer ha-Mitzvoth ha-Gadol (Il Grande Libro dei Comandamenti) di Rabbi Moses di Coucy;
• Sefer ha-Mitzvoth ha-Katan (Il Piccolo Libro dei Comandamenti) di Rabbi Isaac of Corbeil;
• Sefer Yere'im (Il Libro del Timore di Dio) di Rabbi Eliezer di Metz (non ha un elenco chiaro);
• Sefer ha-Mitzvoth di Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan – questo lavoro presenta soltanto o comandamenti validi nel tempo attuale.

Il lavoro di Maimonide

Il più importante tra i lavori descritti in precedenza è Sefer ha-Mitzvoth di Maimonide (Rambam). Maimonide ha lavorato molto per controllare esattamente quale dei comandamenti scritti nella Torah può essere considerato fissato, rispetto ai comandi che Dio ha dato in vari punti della Torah ma che si riferiscono ad azioni particolari compiute una sola volta.
Lui utilizza un insieme di 14 regole (shorashim) per determinare l’inclusione nella lista. Nachmanide ha fatto alcune considerazioni ed ha sostituito alcuni dei punti della lista con altri.
